Global Species Indices

Home / Global Species Indices

Understanding global biodiversity requires insight into where species live, how much we know about them, and how well they are protected. Below are three key indices developed to monitor and support conservation efforts worldwide.

Species Habitat Index

The Species Habitat Index (SHI) reflects the remaining habitat extent available for terrestrial vertebrates based on their ecological requirements. This map highlights regions where habitat loss is impacting biodiversity the most.

Species Information Index

The Species Information Index (SII) measures the availability of spatial data on species distributions. Areas in lighter shades indicate regions where more research and data collection are needed to inform conservation action.

Species Protection Index

The Species Protection Index (SPI) assesses how well protected areas overlap with species distributions. High SPI values suggest effective coverage by protected zones, aiding global conservation goals.
